Life In Good Measure

It is about people, history and your own place on the map

Oh Brother

This article is about sets of brothers who rose to fame. As actors, directors, authors, musicians, politicians, what have you. It is intriguing to look for resemblances between members of the same family - their mannerisms, voices, gaits, and of course their looks. And between members of the same gender, it can be even more intriguing. So let’s go through some well-known sets of brothers here, from the year 1441 onward! Continue reading

Singles' Day 2018

The contemporary people - especially those living in Asia - associate the term Singles' Day with bargain sales. It has in fact become the largest offline and online shopping day in the world, with Asians and Westerners alike spending billions of dollars on purchases from Alibaba and other online retail companies. Singles' Day already surpasses the purchases made on the more widely known Black Friday. But today especially we mean with Singles' Day rather the fact that it is 100 years today since the end of the First World War. Continue reading

Masters of Horror

It is Halloween today folks so this topic is hot! Some of us are fans, some of us would never choose to read a book of this genre or to watch a movie based on one. We talk about horror - which actually is a pretty wide genre. The more graphic it gets, the less likely it may be that one likes it, especially the really graphic ones. The more psychological it gets, the closer it gets to thrillers. Continue reading

United Nations S-Gs

Congratulations United Nations for turning 73 years today! A good day to go through here in Journeys of Life all the people who have hold the position of Secretary General of the United Nations. The original text intended for this article somehow disappeared - in an odd way reflecting the ever changing nature of our world and the politics and conflicts of its countries and other areas. Which the United Nations tries to mediate between. Continue reading

Tyrant

If you’d like to start with a new TV-series that you haven’t seen yet, Tyrant is definitely something worth recommending. The first episode aired in the United States back in 2014, but it doesn’t get antiquated. Not with the way things keep going in the Middle East. The premise of this series is that Bassam “Barry” Al-Fayeed, a married pediatrician living in the United States, with son and daughter, is also the son of a Middle-Eastern tyrant. Continue reading

Seeing is Believing

[caption id=“attachment_5672” align=“alignleft” width=“278”]Not three, but four monkeys[/caption] Incredible! Or credible? You know how people say that “I believe it when I see it!” and that that right there is thought by many as a sound approach to reality. And it is also considered okay to not to believe it once it is seen by someone else. As long as it isn’t you who’s doing the seeing. But how is it when you do see it, and still don’t believe it - even when it is you yourself who saw it? Continue reading

Our Great Composers

What would we do without music? The world would be a bleaker place, that much is for sure. To honor and commemorate our great composers, we present here a list that consists of composers of classical music, but also of more modern music, such as film music. It is nowhere near perfect, but attempts nevertheless to give the timeline of composers through ages. Some of these composers are perhaps better known as conductors, but they still composed their own music as well. Continue reading

Veganism - Here to Stay

If you do your own grocery shopping, you’ve probably seen a major change in shelf labels. More and more labels are about offering the vegan option. Which is a great thing for the world. Since we all know - or should know, in these enlightened times - what a wasteful and detrimental life man has been living as a carnivore considering what it does to the Earth. If it takes 50 000 liters of water to create a couple of pounds of meat to sell, that’s just plain wrong, isn’t it? Continue reading

12 Men on the Moon

[caption id=“attachment_4829” align=“alignleft” width=“289”]Buzz Aldrin in 1969[/caption] Twelve men have walked on the Moon, so far. The Apollo Moon landings took place between 1969 and 1972, and for whatever reason and quite surprisingly, man has not been there since. Here is anyway a list of all these twelve lunar astronauts. Of them four are still alive (as of August 2018) with Harrison Schmitt being the most recent living person to have set his foot on our satellite. Continue reading

Stand-up Comedy

A career as a stand-up comedian must be pretty hard. Having to find good material for a live audience, and to do that on a constant basis. Yet there are hundreds of people doing that for living, at least part of their professional lives. The list below shows some of them. If there is a name missing that you would like to have added, please leave a comment. Having said that, the list is being updated from time to time. Continue reading

The Call of The Woods

We all know that - instinctively or otherwise. That it is good for the mind, body and soul to connect with nature. For example by having a walk in the woods. No matter how urban or modern we are, we all benefit from spending time outdoors. And woods especially have that special pull that draws many of us into leaving everything for a while, and head to be embraced by the trees. Continue reading

Survivor Winners

Survivor is one of the favorite shows of many of us, and definitely of this blogger. As you may know, there are several Survivor series around the world; this article deals solely with the American version. And this one has long been coming: a list of all the Survivor Winners. But since probably not all of you have seen all the seasons, it is time to give a definite S P O I L E R A L E R T ! Continue reading

Canada's Political Map

Canada is a big country - the biggest in the world after Russia - and divided into many parts that might be nice to know more of for those of us who never visited this great country. So here below you see the provinces and territories - in both English and French - with their official two-letter abbreviations and also the capitals. These abbreviations will be used throughout the site. Continue reading

Monthly Latin #1

From this day on there will be another constant presence in Journeys of Life, namely Monthly Latin. That old language isn’t of course an official language anywhere except perhaps in the Vatican State, and in the Catholic Church the use of Latin has greatly diminished since the old-style Latin Mass was phased out more than 40 years ago - in favor of local languages. Latin does remain the official language of the universal Church, but it is used mainly as the language of reference for translating major documents into modern languages. Continue reading

Who Said That!

This is an article series depicting what we people have uttered in a moment of elation, insight, inspiration, wisdom, despair - or any other emotion. The headline suggests anger, and is really a joke here, anger being such a poor indicator. It is instead those other emotions we are looking for. Try to guess/remember first who said that, and if you don’t know, you’ll see who it was at the very end of the article. Continue reading

Your Ancestors

As a courtesy to our readers, Journeys of Life provides a service that might interest some of you. In addition to being able to list your own birth data here, you are allowed to add your ancestors as well. But as you present their name and birth data (as fully as possible), please tell us also their main profession or what they mainly were known for. Also you could give some of the historical background to shed some more light. Continue reading

One Day in the Life of

Have you read the novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn? I have, long time ago. It describes a single day in the life of an ordinary prisoner in a Gulag camp, and now, that book gives life to a new article series in this Journeys of Life: One Day in the Life of people from all walks of life. If we live to be 80, we have lived around 29,200 days. Continue reading
