Life In Good Measure

It is about people, history and your own place on the map

Who Said That! #26

Time for another great quote by some of the great minds of men and women who have walked here before us. About the importance of bringing forth the goodness in each and one of us, to the benefit of ourselves, our loved ones, and in the broader context, the society and the whole world.

Goodness is the only investment

that never fails.

How many examples could we give of this? Countless! Anyone of us could tell how true this is. And those of you who have children, know it so well.

A sentence uttered by the teacher at my sons' kindergarten is like a bell that rings in my head even years, decades after. She said: all the good that you do now for your sons, you will receive manyfold in the future - no good deed will go unnoticed.

That bell has rung true, over and over. And so it is that goodness really is the only investment that never fails. For any other kind can. You cannot rely on a monetary investment bringing you your money’s worth, or even saving you from loss. But you can rely on love, respect and compassion bringing you fruits of the same.

And who was it again who uttered this wisdom?

It was the American essayist, poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau who created a whole philosophy around living a simple, yet rich life. Here’s another piece of wisdom by him: “Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind”.
