is a friend indeed. Or so we hear.
A friend can be pure poison, and it make take decades till one realizes that the “friend” actually was a fiend. Of course, people may change a bit over the years, but sometimes it takes a major conflict to realize that your friend never really had your best interest or any interest in mind, but was always concerned with his or her own.

The mere title makes you feel ill, doesn’t it?! Unless you belong to the group of people who really believe that one should. Act one’s age.
What does it even mean? That one should look and behave like most of the people that age do – or did or have done the past decade or so ? With total disregard of personal preferances but succumbing to prevalent expectations – whatever they are, in whatever culture.

Imagine if there was a map where you could see the places on Earth with the most amount of human suffering. A crazy thought, right?
You might right away think of the myriad places of wars. Or all the hospitals and other places where people have been treated with various illnesses, or waiting to die. Or homes with domestic violence scattered allover this beautiful planet.
But might not delivery rooms be where the most physical hurt is experienced?

Ever thought about that? Many of us have. And our answers even to ourselves may differ depending on our cicumstances. But many of us do toy with the idea. For human life can be a struggle, and the life of many an animal seem so much easier. Though of course that is not necessarily so. For even with this, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.

Camembert.
Edam. Smooth, regular cheese. Not raising any eyebrows, you go through life smoothly and blend in well.
Emmenthal. With lots of airy holes, but the taste is mature. You made a lot of mistakes, took leaps of faith, stretched yourself thin. But when all is said and done, you arrive to a point in your life that seems mature, mellow and worth it all!

There are many ways with which we can identify with another person. It is much harder to do that with say, a dog - no matter how much we love our pets -
Let’s go on an imaginary journey of identification. We embark on it anywhere in the world, and the only common thing we all share on that journey is that it takes place on our home planet earth. We move from the apparently easiest identifiable to the apparently least identifiable parts of our selves.

We’ve all probably experienced it at one point or another: the curse of inertia. Inertia could be seen as the other side of the coin where “the better side” has rest (add italics) printed on it. But whereas rest is a positive and necessary thing, really needed as a balancing ingredient between action, inertia is its negative counterpart, making it difficult to go back to action.
And we can see it happening in so many areas of our lives.

Tempo. It all comes down to tempo. Sometimes we are just too slow to get our ideas crossed, and others too fast to get theirs.
Sometimes we suffer from a chronic illness that makes us unable to express ourselves in the manner or speed we would prefer. In such instances it may be particularly frustrating to “take part” in a conversation. By the time you finally remember what to say or have found the right words to what you want to say, the conversation may have proceeded too far from that point, and you end up saying nothing, thinking that others would not catch on your drift at all anymore.

When you here the word sin, the first thing that springs to mind is the Bible, right? The story of the ten commandments, and if you break any of them, you are committing a sin.
Not all of us are religious, but we can still appreciate the idea of sin. Let’s go through each of them, with a little twinkle in our eyes. Let us also employ the idea presented by Shirley MacLaine in her book xxxxx, namely that Live is backwards Evil, so not to really live and let live, is tantamount to being the opposite of life, i.

We all know we are at some point of our lives going to die. No matter how strong we live, no matter what we believe, no matter how much we have, we are going to die.
And that doesn’t necessarily sound so bad, at least not to many of you who have had near-death-experiences.
The creative urge leaves you oftentimes kind of sidetracked when it comes to mortality. It is hard to fathom that there comes a point when you can’t create anymore.

But when it comes to oceans, there is no way we get by by ourselves for there is just too much water between the dry lands.

Most of us grow up thinking that a question deserves an answer. So we answer most questions - especially when we are kids - to the best of our ability, and possibly with a degree of politeness and kindness. And we expect the same favor returned to us - if we do ask.
And so the conversations in our lives go on, with us posing questions, expecting ensuing answers, sharing experiences, coming up with deductions, commitments, new ideas, and so forth.

Since years back it has been a popular pastime for some of us to check on YouTube for all sorts of survival and prepper videos. Preppers, i.e. people getting ready to live without societal support in times of disaster, are growing in numbers by the second. National and global events always trigger the escalation of prepping, but even when the times are calmer and seem more secure, and there really doesn’t seem to be a whole lot to worry about for the majority of us, prepping will always be something that people just do naturally.

The idea being that it may take only a few good men - and/or women - to turn a bad thing or circumstance into something better, against all odds. It takes dedication, perseverance and belief in what one is doing.
The opposite is also true. It may take only a few bad men (and women, but more seldom) to turn a good thing or circumstance into something worse, perhaps much worse.

When do we reach our intellectual peak? When our thoughts and reasoning seem to travel in the speed of light, and we absorb everything we experience with such lightness - at the age of fifteen perhaps?
Or later? Twenty-one? No matter which age, there comes a time when we start noticing the decline. It is inevitable, like all the phases of life. Of course we get less agile physically - if we now ever were that in the first place - and lose a lot of our physical strength and capacities.

Music heals. In the deepest abysses of sorrow, music heals, soothes, takes us somewhere with no time and space.
Listening to a piece by Garth Brooks, Time by Hans Zimmer, Schindler’s List by John Williams etc etc, through the earphones at top volume and sobbing in rhythm with it all can be an utterly cleansing, cathartic experience.
Here’s one more. On The Nature of Daylight by the British composer Max Richter.

Aaron & Shawn Ashmore
This is a fascinating subject when it comes to people: having a twin! For those of us who don’t have a twin (most of us), and in this case, an identical twin (almost all of us), it is pretty hard to fathom that there could be someone who looks just like you. And with whom you would be so much closer in every sense of the word from the moment you are born.

When is a pretty new article series here in Journeys of Life that we attempt to develop into something much bigger. The stories here can entail most anything, and is really about creative writing – as opposed to some other article series here. The When can be a beginning of a question sentence, or a story that follows. These stories will typically be short ones, but can be long-reads as well.

Doesn’t that’s sound a bit horrific? It is a term not necessarily known to all of us. But the phenomenon is commonplace, this erection of hairs on the skin due to cold, fear, excitement, euphoria or sexual arousal.
Before that erection happens, there usually is a sudden surge of warmth throughout your body. In colloquial language, we know this phenomenon of course as goose bumps. The reason for that choice of words naturally being that our skin then looks like the skin of an unfeathered goose.

Johnny Johnsson - May 0, 2020Now that there are too many people in the woods, and many not remembering to keep their distance! Is it so in Finland? You in Finland seem to appreciate the tranquility of the forest more than Swedes! As you know, I love the forests, and unfortunately I see as few people there now as before the outbreak of the pandemic.
Yes, I do believe that Finns might love forests a bit more than the Swedes.

I started writing this article before COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 changed things for us all. Now at the time of publication, it takes of necessity another turn. Hopefully the corona pandemic too.
The article concerned our healthy longing for that quiet place away from the constant crowdiness and noise in the streets, escalators, corridores, stores and wherever people need to be and go.

You never know
when it is time for someone
to go.
Any time you meet a person
it might be the last time
you see him or her.
This we know, logically.
But we don’t know when it is time.
Or sometimes we do.
Like my grandma seemed to know
as she was bidding me farewell
me leaving for home
after visiting her
in another country.
She was pretty old

The words we didn’t say. How they haunt us sometimes. Maybe more than the words we did say. Even if those too might haunt us.
At some point of your life you may realize that - despite all the inherent intentions of verbalizing your thoughts, encouraging your loved ones to spread their wings and soar high, expressing your love towards them, being a dear aunt or uncle, showing how much you actually care - you actually haven’t done much any of that.

Now, let’s have a few words about that ever important word - now. So very important - and so hated by Procrastinators Ltd. It doesn’t take much energy to utter it, but oh boy what it entails! The energy you need to exude to make things happen! The courage to let go and let them happen!
We say It’s now or never. Or like Golda Meir asked: If not now, when?

Whether you are the gregarious type or more prone to privacy, there are moments in life when you may want to strike up a conversation with a total stranger.
Be it at a bus stop, a bar or a street corner, the consequences of unexpected openers can be far-reaching for both parties - or a pleasant break from your usual routine.
Loneliness is such a common thing among the older population (and yes, even the younger) that striking a conversation with a senior citizen at a bus stop is often a most welcome thing.

Life is a pretty humdrum existence most of the time. With some ups and downs, along with long stretches when nothing extraordinary or interesting seems to be happening. But in most everybody’s life there are also special moments, some of which are almost magical.
Can you recollect any magical moments in your own life?
It doesn’t have to be anything seemingly special. But rather something that feels special.
Like this one instant when a teenager is waiting at a bus stop on her way home from school.

When you think about the ins and outs of things, don’t you think there should be something out there, in the universe, living more or less like we live here on Earth, circumstances withstanding?
Let’s take this from start. Logically thinking, if you’re inside a box, and knowing what you know about the world (which is very limited for all of us), you would think that there is something outside the box as well.

Let’s have some fun - and points to ponder! Let’s explore the self from within on a “governmental platform”. Let’s assume that we are all governments onto ourselves - as we indeed are - and see what sort of roles we could be building within ourselves in order to make the most of our lives here on earth.
So, let’s say that we have built-in ministers or agents for each purpose and opportunity in life.

As we grow older, we all change in some major ways. Physically, naturally, comes to mind first. But there comes a whole package of psychological things as well. One of them being the eradication of some of the prejudices concerning old age. Here is one of them.
Don’t we usually think that old people like to think of and talk about old times a lot? Well, many do and nothing wrong with that.

When we get older, we tend to appreciate old folks more. Not necessarily because we ourselves are getting older and can easier identify with them, no. But because they may not be there anymore to tell their stories, and we realize what we’ve missed. The missed opportunities to just having them around, and having them tell their stories. About themselves, about our parents, about our family history. Who else is gonna do that but they?

It has been a long time since those days in November 1978. Some of you may not even have heard about it. But it took place 40 years ago today, in Guyana, South America.
The Jonestown massacre, organized by the leaders of The Peoples Temple of the Disciples of Christ, and more precisely, Jim Jones. It doesn’t really matter with what fancy name the leaders call their cults. And you can easily read about the background of this particular cult and the event since there is plenty of information available.

Let’s have another piece in our series Monthly Latin! Our fascination of this old language may very well keep it alive for centuries to come as there is no end to the wise and for ever applicable phrases in Latin.
And the next Latin phrase is just as eternal as any other - and very easy, although possibly painful, to relate to.
Ex nihilo nihil fit The literal translation of this would be Out of nothing, nothing comes.

Incredible! Or credible? You know how people say that “I believe it when I see it!” and that that right there is thought by many as a sound approach to reality. And it is also considered okay to not to believe it once it is seen by someone else. As long as it isn’t you who’s doing the seeing. But how is it when you do see it, and still don’t believe it - even when it is you yourself who saw it?
