Life In Good Measure

It is about people, history and your own place on the map

Popular Genealogy Sites

Millions of people all over the world get the genealogy bug sooner or later, mostly later, in their lives.

Luckily, these days when you want to know more about your family history, there are all kinds of online resources available. You always start small, but pretty soon realize how much information there is to both hold and have. It requires navigating the multigenerational web of births, and via marriages names change which complicates the search, and migrations to other countries add their own flavor to the quest.

So you soon discover that what started as a small search into your direct bloodline, will very easily evolve into so much more - which is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing because you get to find out about your roots into a distant past. Curse because it gets to be just too much (information) at times!

Anyway, this growing interest in genealogy has also resulted in harnessing our knowledge of DNA testing beyond criminology. It has helped amateur genealogists to learn so much more about where they came from since the data is not just about birth attests but real biological evidence.

Here are some of the genealogy sites for you to test.

Ancestry.com
One of the leading genealogy sites. The section Meet our customers gives interesting insight into what the site might have in store for you as well.

Family Search
is the site created and run by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with a very broad database. They also have the FamilySearch Research Wiki which is a great tool in finding about your roots.

Geni
has been round for a long time and is the one I myself have been using. Goes a long way without going pro, i.e. subscribing to deeper material and methods.

My Heritage
Clicking at the link will probably give the version in your country or language. But this is possibly the best known, and given highest rating here as far as DNA testing goes. It does seem to be the number one place to go and get your DNA tested.

One Great Family
says they have the world’s largest online family tree. They offer a free 7-day trial, and the only way to test the claim is naturally try the site yourself. But it looks good!

The Geneaologist
The Genealogist is, according to the site, the leading British Genealogy Research website. It does give all the tools a genealogist would need, and claims the widest covering from the year 1127. A lot of the information contained in the pages is subscription based.

Read also this article, The 10 best family tree sites which was published February 2021.

And then there is Journeys of Life, this site here that offers a broad overview of history, and the chance to leave your own mark in these pages by adding your family members here from year 1000 onward - and even earlier if you get that far in your search! Instructions how to go about that you will find here. No DNA testing, but a broad outlook on human history from a myriad of perpectives. Also, this is probably the least commercial genealogical site for instead of subscriptions, we hope to run on donations and possibly some ads in the future.

No matter what online sites you use, we hope you have both success and fun in building your own unique family tree!
