Monthly Latin #16

Not all work is compensated. But we all deserve to get paid for our work. Sometimes the compensation is ridiculously small, and we may sell ourselves short. We can think of a million occasions when compensation has not been forthcoming at all. Or maybe we get rewarded, paid for our work retroactively through completely different people and for completely different reasons.

There is a Latin saying for this what should be so obvious, yet remains so elusive:

Omnia labor optat premium.

i.e. “All work has to be compensated”, or paid. Who said that remains elusive as well. But what doesn’t is the economic inequality in all societies. Our economic worth is calculated in algorithms based on trending values. If we want to be financially smart, we need to decide for ourselves to jump in the wagon that rides in that direction.

Perhaps in some distant utopian future we all get recognition for the hours we put in on daily basis. Calculated by supersmart computers and put forth in the form of direct payment for work rendered - whether it is seen or heard by anyone beoynd the immediate circle.

Amateurs of all sorts. Behind-the-scenes labourers. Fathers. Healthcare workers. Lay social reformers. Maintenance people. Mothers. Social media workers. Uplifters of all kind.
