Monthly Latin #13

This time in Monthly Latin something simple. Two words that cover all of us. Or do they?

UNUS MULTORUM

i.e. one of many. One in a mass. An average person. Unus (one) multorum (of many). But as we all are but one, even when we have the power of/over many, the old hierarchical idea of the little man should in all honesty give way to the ideological side of those two words. The idea that we truly are each and one of us but one, and together at our best, one.

Just as mathematically one can only be divided by one (giving one) unless you want fractions, any one of us and each one of us can decide to be seen as one in a whole (nation/world), and by so doing, be part of the unification process.

Alas, as the ego of many prevail, that by itself is a major obstacle to this science fiction type and almost otherworldly objective. As do vanity, worry, finances, heritage, hopelessness, envy, and a countless other things and characteristics.

Like the balls of yarn in the picture - of different colors but at start with more or less the same amount of meters to weave, knit or crochet - we can mold our lives so that we don’t remain a tangle of yarn, but perhaps a beautiful pullover or west that we can wear with pride, and give to someone else.

So are we to be satisfied with just being one of many, with not much to say about things happening around us? The past couple of years have shown us that we - a multitude of ones - can truly affect things by deciding how to handle them. Perhaps then one day that unus multorum becomes something to be proud of. Perhaps an earth saver.
