Language Day #8

LDThankYoujpg Welcome again to Language Day! If you haven’t read the introduction yet, please do it here. This time we’ll go through that simple but oh so useful and such an appreciated word: Thank You! Here presented the most simple form of it in different languages, more or less corresponding to the English Thanks. The way the word is written in its own language is given after the language designation. How it is pronounced is  for you to find out! Perhaps by visiting a country where the language is spoken?

Aitäh (Estonian) Arigatō (Japanese) ありがとう. But very often takes the almost must-ending gozaimasu, making it a much more polite way to express gratitude. Blagodarya (Bulgarian) Благодаря Danke (German) similar to Scandinavian tack/takk and English Thanks, all being Germanic languages. Dhanyavaad (Hindi) धन्यवाद Diolch (Welsh) Dzięki (Polish) Efcharistó (Greek) ευχαριστώ. Comes most often with the ending -para poli, taking the meaning  Thanks a lot! Go raibh maith agat (Irish) sounds like a major thing to express your gratitude in Irish! Gracias (Spanish) Gratias ago (Latin) Grazie (Italian) K̄hxbkhuṇ (Thai) ขอบคุณ You’d better go to Thailand once to hear this properly… Kiitos (Finnish) - easy to remember for the Greeks as it means whale in Greek. So for them it may sound like a big Thank you! Mahalo (Hawaiian) - easy to remember for the Finns as the first part of the word - maha -  means belly in Finnish. So maybe after a good meal… Merci (French) Mulțumiri (Romanian) Obrigado (Portuguese) easy for the English to remember as it resembles obliged. Shakar (Arabic) Shnorhakalut’yun (Armenian) շնորհակալություն Shukrani (Swahili) Spuceebah (Russian) Спасибо Tack (Swedish) this word is more or less the same in all the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland) Tak (Danish) Takk (Icelandic) Takk (Norwegian) Teşekkürler (Turkish) Thanks (English) Whakawhetai (Maori) Xièxiè (Chinese) 谢谢 Here’s something nice for the occasion: Thank You for the Music by ABBA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dcbw4IEY5w
