Life In Good Measure

It is about people, history and your own place on the map

Language Day #6

LDWhereIs This time in Language Day a very useful expression if you are traveling abroad. The one question that you need to ask when looking for a place, any place. You already know where you want to get to, and you only need to attach two simple words to it: where is?

Of course you can always try English anywhere you go, but the fact is that not everyone knows English, so here goes: where is in several other languages. The languages in front in alphabetical order, and the question itself in bold with the approximate pronunciation.

Chinese: 哪裡 (nah lee) Danish: Hvor er? (vohr eh) Estonian: Kus on? (qus on) Finnish: Missä on? (mis sah on) French: Où se trouvé? Greek: που είναι? (pooh eenay) Hawaiian: Ma hea ia? Hindi: कहाँ है ? kahaan hai) Icelandic: Hvar er? (vahr ehr) Japanese: どこですか (doco des ka) Norwegian: Hvor er? (vahr ehr) Portuguese: Onde é? Russian: где? (gzah) Spanish: Donde está? Swahili: Iko wapi? Swedish: Var är? (vahr eh) Turkish: Nerede? Welsh: Ile mae? (lah my)
