Let’s make a closer acquaintance with the Hawaiian islands, the chain of volcanic islands in the North Pacific Ocean. And then see who was born there throughout the years.
First there was the Kingdom of Hawaii (1795-1898), then the Territory of Hawaii of the United States (1898-1959), and as of the 21st of August 1959, the State of Hawaii, the 50th and the most recent state of the United States.
The state of Hawaii encompasses nearly the entire Hawaiian archipelago, comprising hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles. At the southeastern end of the archipelago, the eight main islands are: Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and the Island of Hawaiʻi.
Here’s a closer look at the Hawaiian Islands, from northwest to southeast: 
Niihau (Ni’ihau) The Forbidden Isle. The westernmost island, owned by the Robinson family. Kauai (Kaua’i) The Garden Island. Geologically the oldest of the Hawaiian islands. Oahu (O’ahu) The Gathering Place. The third largest island. The state capital Honolulu is here, and around 2/3 of the population of the U.S. State of Hawaii. Molokai (Moloka’i) The Friendly Isle. xx Lanai (Lāna’i) The Pineapple Isle. The least inhabited of the islands. Kahoolawe (Kaho’olawe) The Island of Kanaloa, Kohemalamalama, Hineli’i, and Kahiki Moe. The smallest of the eight main volcanic islands. Sparsely populated due to its lack of fresh water. Maui (Maui) The Valley Isle. The second largest island. Hawaii (Hawai’i) The Big Island. The largest of the Hawaiian islands. The dormant volcano Mauna Kea is located here.
